No matter what you want to achieve in life, we spend masses of time talking about it. We tell everyone and anyone who will listen, what we want to do: I want to be a writer, I want to travel, I want to earn a million…

Words can mean so much but they can also sound hollow. Talking the talk is a start – but it means nothing, if you’re not walking the walk!

Do what you say you’re going to do

As Danielle LaPorte states in her ‘Credo for Making it Happen’… Do what you say you’re going to do:

If you spend so much time talking about what you want to do, without completing any actions, you’ll come across as just a dreamer. You’ll be seen as someone who doesn’t have enough drive to push themselves forward. What makes it worse, is you will be those things. You will be just another person who didn’t have enough courage to step up and do what they said they would do.

Principles for good business – and a good life

This isn’t just limited to your career goals and aspirations – it’s something that you carry throughout your everyday life too.

You see, the issue of not acting on your words is open to several interpretations by others, including:

  • You’re a dreamer
  • You’re a liar
  • You’re unreliable
  • You’re inconsistent
  • You’re a victim in some way (to life, circumstances, fate, your upbringing, your gender and whatever other limiting beliefs people like to use on others!)

Not only that, but more importantly, you come across as that sort of person to yourself!

You then start to believe those labels and will then look to find excuses as to why you couldn’t do what you said you were going to do – meaning new self-limiting beliefs, additional whips to beat yourself up with and becoming the type of person who doesn’t take responsibility for their own life and actions.

Who do you want to be?

So who do you want to be? Do you want to be someone who is committed to their goals and dreams and acts on them – or would you rather stretch your comfort zone and yourself, onto bigger and better things.

Remember, at any moment in time, you can choose what you believe moving forward.

As harsh as it sounds, the bottom line is this: you have two choices – either do what you say you’re going to do, or learn to shut the hell up and stop talking a talk you have no intention of carrying out the actions for… the choice, as ever, is yours.
